Tomatoes

Our tomato plants have really taken off in the last couple of weeks and are now ready to be taken home.

Most days this term we have been putting them outside to get them ready for the outdoors.

Next week the children can take them home to plant in a garden or in a larger pot or bucket. They will need to be staked.

I will leave a couple of plants in the class so that the class can learn what they need to do to look after their plant. We are going to plant these ones in buckets.

Room 20's plants

Here are couple of photos of our lettuces. We have broken them up and put them in containers so that we can bring them home. Hopefully you could plant them in your garden or continue to grow them in the small containers.

Some of us have also been growing tomatoes. They have sprouted and are now about 3 or 4 cm tall. We will leave these at school over the holidays and take them home next term.

GROWING PLANTS IN ROOM 20

This term we have been learning about plants and what they need to survive. We have shown the principal a presentation on why and where we should  have a garden. We came up with plans on where to grow a garden. All the table groups in our class were given a place in the school to research and then they had to report back to the class on why it would be a good place to have a garden.
We have grown our own lettuce plants in class. We had to figure out where to put it and how to look after it properly. Everyone in the class got into groups of  3 or 4 people and filled up a plastic bag with soil and had to make sure not to inhale it. Then we put in about 7 lettuce seeds. After that we had to sprinkle about a table spoon of soil on top of the seeds. Then we watered them and put them in a sunny place. We had to rearrange the class to do this.

The reasonability that comes with having a garden at Silverstream school is watering it every week and making sure that it gets a lot of sun.

Kapa Haka

Kapa Haka

For the past 3 terms Room 20 and other Aku Nui classes have been doing Kapa Haka.

Matua Whaitiri ( our Kapa Haka leader ) led us with some lovely songs and actions from original Kapa Haka songs. We have learnt some Hakas as well as karakias. Matua Whaitiri also plays the guitar sometimes he does cool guitar strums and the end of some songs such as the song Rona.

The Girls and Boys are separated into two halves of the hall. The girls at the front and the boys are at the back, ( unless we're doing the Haka.

Inter School Swimming Sports

__/__/__

5 lucky room 20 swimmers went to the Inter-School Swimming Sports.
There were about 30-40 kids in total from each school.
These are the 6 schools that participated;
Plateau, Silverstream, Upper Hutt, Pinehaven, Oxford Crescent and St Brendan's.
We went to H20, so it was already crowded.

The first races were called up at 9:45 a.m.
They started with the freestyle and ended with the backstroke. They were all very good races and the cheering was deafening.

Many people did well and got third second or even first. Silverstream School did well in all the relays. The mixed medley, Boys freestyle, Girls freestyle and the mixed Boys and Girls freestyle were all won by Silverstream School.

In the end it was Silverstream who won the shield.
Once Mr Leach ( Room 20's teacher) announced that Silverstream School won, there was an explosion from where Silverstream was sitting, and it sounded as though the pool blew up!
